Cleaning Process — Step by Step

Our 7-stage mechanical cleaning process is designed to eliminate every category of physical contamination while preserving the integrity and appearance of the chilli pods. Each stage targets a specific type of impurity, ensuring the final product is virtually free of foreign matter.

  1. Initial Winnowing Remove light chaff, dust, loose skin, and lightweight foreign material using high-velocity air blowers. This stage dramatically reduces fine particulate contamination from the incoming lot.
  2. Destoning Gravity-fed stone separators use density differences to separate stones, sand, soil clumps, and heavy foreign matter from chilli pods. Critical for achieving <0.5% FM specification.
  3. Stem Removal Mechanical de-stemmers remove the calyx (crown) and peduncle (stem) from chilli pods. Essential for stemless grade production and for reducing organic foreign matter percentage.
  4. Colour Sorting CCD camera-based optical colour sorters detect and eject discoloured, black, mouldy, and damaged pods at high speed. This stage is the most technologically advanced step in our cleaning line.
  5. Final Sieving Vibrating sieve screens remove remaining fines, dust, and broken pod fragments. This produces a uniform, clean appearance in the final packed product.
  6. Quality Check Manual inspection team reviews the final cleaned lot on a light-table inspection belt. Any pods that escaped automated sorting are removed by hand at this stage.
  7. Moisture Testing Every batch is tested for moisture content using a calibrated NIR moisture analyzer before packing. Batches exceeding 12% moisture are returned for additional drying.

What is Machine Cleaned Chilli?

Machine cleaned chilli refers to dry red chilli that has been processed through a series of mechanical equipment specifically designed to remove physical impurities. The term distinguishes this grade from hand-cleaned or uncleaned bulk chilli commonly traded in domestic Indian markets.

In the context of international export trade, "machine cleaned" is a specific quality designation that signals to buyers that the product has passed through destoning, winnowing, stem removal, and optical colour sorting equipment — resulting in measurably lower foreign matter, stem content, and damaged pod percentages compared to raw, uncleaned chilli.

For import markets including Vietnam, China, Malaysia, and the Middle East, machine cleaned grade is now a baseline requirement rather than a premium option. Import regulations in these markets specify maximum allowable percentages of foreign matter, and shipments arriving with excessive FM face rejection or costly reclassification at destination ports.

Gaman Impex processes machine cleaned chilli across all major Guntur varieties — Teja S17, S4 Sannam, Byadgi, and 334 — ensuring buyers can source consistent quality regardless of the variety they require.

Machine Cleaning vs. Hand Cleaning

While both methods aim to improve product cleanliness, machine cleaning delivers superior consistency, speed, and documented quality outcomes that hand cleaning cannot match for large-scale export volumes.

Who Needs Machine Cleaned Grade?

Food Manufacturers

Industrial food processing companies that use dry red chilli as an ingredient — for spice blends, ready meal seasoning, snack coatings, and condiments — require machine cleaned grade to maintain consistent product quality and pass their own internal quality audits. Even a small percentage of foreign matter in a food production line can cause machinery damage or product recalls.

Spice Grinding Industry

Chilli powder manufacturers require machine cleaned whole chilli because stones and foreign matter entering grinders cause severe equipment damage. For the grinding industry, machine cleaned chilli is not optional — it is a fundamental procurement requirement.

Retail Packagers

Supermarket and retail brand packagers require machine cleaned grade for branded consumer products. Retail-packed whole dry chilli in transparent packaging must present a clean, uniform appearance — any visible stem remnants, stones, or discoloured pods are unacceptable for consumer sales.

Import Distributors

Import distributors in Vietnam, China, Malaysia, and the Middle East who on-sell to local manufacturers source machine cleaned grade to minimize rejection and complaints from their downstream customers. It reduces their post-import cleaning costs and improves their own margins.

Our Processing Equipment

Gaman Impex has invested in modern chilli processing equipment specifically selected for handling dry red chilli without damaging pod integrity. Our machinery operates at high throughput while maintaining gentle handling to preserve the visual quality of the chillies.

Gravity Separator / Destoner

Density-based table separator that removes stones, sand, and heavy organic material using vibration and air flow. Calibrated specifically for chilli pod density profiles.

Air Aspiration System

Multi-channel air blower system that removes chaff, dust, lightweight foreign matter, and loose pod skin from the chilli stream before and after destoning.

Mechanical De-stemmer

Rotating drum or belt de-stemmer that removes calyx and peduncle from chilli pods for production of stemless and low-stem export grades without excessive pod breakage.

Optical Colour Sorter (CCD)

High-resolution CCD camera sorting machine that scans every pod and uses air jets to eject discoloured, mouldy, black, or off-colour pods at processing speeds of 1–3 MT per hour.

Vibrating Sieve Grader

Multi-deck vibrating sieve separates pods by size, removes fines, and ensures uniform pod dimensions in the final lot — important for retail presentation grades.

NIR Moisture Analyzer

Near-Infrared moisture meter provides rapid, non-destructive moisture content readings for every batch before packing. Ensures all outgoing lots are within the ≤12% moisture specification.
